Obituary.
THE LATE MRS. ALFORD.
The late Mrs. Caroline Alford, relict of the late Mr. Charles Alford, whose death was recently announced in your columns (writes our Bundanba correspondent, was born in Higham, Somersetshire, England, on March 19, 1827. Her maiden name was Caroline Weydan. She was married to Charles Alford in 1846, at Budjewater. Eleven years after-in 1857-she and her husband came out to Queensland in the sailing-ship Mary Pleasant, amongst her shipmates being Mr. and Mrs. Hillier, sen., of Booval; Mr. and Mrs. James Pocock, sen., of Bundanba; Mr. Chas. Emery, of Goodna; Mr. Angus McDonald, and others. They landed in Moreton Bay, and lived for a time in what is now known as Fortitude Valley. Mr. Alford was employed here getting firewood for the kilns connected with some brickworks owned by a Mr. Scott. Subsequently, he left for the Pine River, and worked in the capacity of chief gardener, for a Mr. James Cash, who owned a cattle station. It might here be stated that in the Pine River district in those days; the blacks were very dangerous; in fact, they became so threatening in their demeanour, that Mr. Alford had on one occasion to kill one in self-defence. After residing on the Pine River for a few months, he shifted to the One-Mile Swamp, as it was then called, but now known as Woolloongabba. Shortly afterwards he came to Bundanba, where he lived with one interval of about four or five years, all his life. These few years were spent at Harrisville, where Mr. Alford purchased a farm and followed farming pursuits. He subsequently sold the farm, and returned to his former home near the Bundanba railway station.
Here he resided till his death, which occurred in July, 1898. After Mr. Alford's demise, his wife disposed of the old home, and went to live with her daughter, Mrs. Enoch Robinson, of Silkstone, where she remained until her death on Sunday last, October 17. Mrs. Alford had not been in the best of health for the previous six months; although in that respect, there was no thing to cause alarm till about two months ago, when she was seized with a paralytic stroke during the night.
With careful nursing and medical attention, however, she seemed to overcome the effects of the stroke, and was able to go about her work as usual; but last Saturday week, October 9, she had a second seizure, from which she never rallied, but gradually sank, and death claimed her on Sunday morning at 5 o'clock. She leaves behind her a family of four-two sons and two daughters - Mr. George Alford, of Anthony ; Mr. Joseph Alford, of Mount Chalmers; Mrs. Enoch Robinson, of Silkstone; and Mrs. Cornelius Robinson, of Newtown. One of her sons, Mr. William Alford, pre-deceased her some 18 years ago.
The funeral took place on Monday afternoon, and was largely attended by the deceased's friends and relatives. Wreaths were sent by the following :-Hon Lewis and Mrs. Thomas, Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Wyman, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Real, Mr. Henry Pocock, sen., Mrs. Jacob Tapp, Mr. and Mrs. W. Robinson, Mrs. William Alford, Mr. and Mrs. Thos. George, and Mr. and Mrs. C. Robinson. The service at the grave was conducted by the Rev. N. W. Beaney.
