ALFORD George and Maria Caroline (nee SOLWAY)
|
Notes |
- George was one year old when he and his parents Charles and Caroline and sisters Harriet and Emily emigrated from Somerset, England aboard the 'Mary Pleasants', arriving in Moreton Bay, Queensland in 1847.
George grew up at Bundamba and was a labourer of 24 years when he married Maria Caroline SOLWAY at the Wesleyan Methodist church, Birkwood, near Ipswich on 3 August 1881. Five days later, the Queensland Times covered the event.
Where the young couple lived immediately after their marriage is unknown, but the following year, when their first child Elizabeth Hill was born they moved to Basin Pocket, a suburb of Ipswich. The family expanded with the births of Emily Ada 1883, Joseph 1884. They had moved further westward to Teviotville by 1888 where George (Jr) was born, followed three years later by the birth of their last child Mabel Caroline in 1891.
George (Sr) worked as a railway lengthsman and fettler during the construction of the Ipswich-Teviotville-Boonah line from late 1880s and early 1890s. He worked side-by-side with a man named Fred GUARD, a Christadelphian by religion, who greatly influenced George to reconsider his staunch Methodist beliefs. Eventually George was converted and was baptised as a Christadelphian (greek for 'a brother of Christ'). Maria took a little more time, be she too was baptised.
George worked for the railway department until the family had saved enough money to buy a dairying property at Anthony, near Roadvale, in the Fassifern Valley. He acquired the title deeds for the property, portion no. 214 in the parish of Fassifern and containing 88 acres, 2 roods, 2 perches, on 18 December 1891. The family owned this farming and dairying property called 'Hawkford' up until 1972, when it was sold by George and Maria's son, George Alford (Jr) who took over the reins in 1930. (Hawkford is most probably a compilation of the property's first selector's name Hawkins and the Alford name.)
Earlier, George (Sr) and Maria decided to retire and moved back to Ipswich where they bought their house at Raceview.
The Alford children attended Teviotville Primary School originally known as the Teviotville Station School that had begun in 1881.
In 1910 George and Maria adopted a two year old boy named Harold JOHNS, who unmarried mother was without any means of support. When he was 21 Harold (Harry) changed his name to Harold John Alford.
After Maria died in 1930 Georged lived another twenty years moving back and forth between his children's families but stayed mainly with his youngest child Mabel and her husband Bill Rossow. George was living with them permanently in 1946. He died of old age accompanied by senitlity aged 93 and was buried next to Maria in Ipswich Cemetery.
