Students Sentenced
Judge Winneke, in the General Sessions last week admitted he was puzzled how to deal with two University students, Carl Philip Kevin Beissel, 18, of Rockleigh Road, South Yarra, and Gerald Sedgeman, 19, of Park Street, South Yarra, who had pleaded guilty to having held up a garage man at revolver point and robbed him of £23 17 8.
The youths were alleged to have admitted to the police that they had entered on the exploit to get money for a holiday trip.
Judge Winneke said he thought the best thing for the boys themselves would be to release them, but a crime like theirs, committed in such circumstances, merited some punishment, to warn others that such actions could not be tolerated.
He sentenced them to 12 months' imprisonment.
