The youths were alleged to have admitted to the police that they had entered on the exploit to get money for a holiday trip. Judge Winneke said he thought the best thing for the boys themselves would be to release them, but a crime like theirs, committed in such circumstances, merited some punishment, to warn others that such actions could not be tolerated. He sentenced them to 12 months' imprisonment.
