Obituary.
MR. A. ECKART.
The death of another old pioneer (Mr. A. Eckart) occurred suddenly on Tuesday night, the 26th of May (writes our Hillside correspondent). Mr. Eckart was about during the day as usual, and was in high spirits. After a hearty supper he retired. About an hour later, Mr. Echart sat up in bed, then, suddenly, his head drooped and he fell back dead. He was an old identity and highly respected, and had reached the extremely old age of 91 years and eight months. He was born at Mecklenburg, Germany, but, at an early age, he made his way to Copenhagen, Denmark, where he married and resided for some years. He subsequently immigrated to Queensland with his wife and family, and was for some years engaged in shepherding at Normanby Station. He and his son, then selected land at Hillside, where deceased had resided ever since. He leaves a widow and one son.

Notes |
- Adolph, aged 49, his wife Anna (nee Ramsen/Ramseng) aged 43, and son Anton Patric Theodore, aged 17 years, migrated from Denmark to Qld aboard the ship "Reichstag", leaving from the mouth of the Elbe River, Hamburg, Germany on 17 April 1872. The ship arrived in Moreton Bay, Qld on 1 August 1872.
The following is an extract from a booklet written about the emigrant ship, "Reichstag'... 'At this point in time, America and Australia, and especially the colony of Queensland were looking to Europe for immigrants. Queensland was looking for good and strong men and women, people who had knowledge of trade and architecture, and there was promise of land. How attractive this olive branch must have seemed. Heussler & Co was one of the agents recruiting migrants for the Queensland Government, and had their scouts out. The migrants were offered free passage and it seems, employment for two years, at the discretion of the Government of the colony.
When the agents had recruited enough people to take the gamble, shipping was then arranged, and so it became the lot of the steel sailing ship "Reichstag" to bring these 369 migrants to Qld, departing Hamburg 17.4.1872 and arriving in Moreton Bay 1.8.1872."
Anton made an application to select a homestead on 3 September 1877. The selection was no. 4792 in the parish of Walloon in the county of Churchill, portion no. 684 containing 94 acres. After five years, proof of fullfilment of conditions were made by Anton, and witnessed by his near neighbour George Beitzel and one other.
Improvements Anton made were the following:-
Slab and shingle house and kitchen costing 30 pounds.
20 acres of scrubland cleared costing 60 pounds.
20 chains pailing & wire fencing costing 20 pounds.
Witnesses to improvements made were George Beitzel and Johann FW Rossow, both near neighbours and they signed as witnesses at Minden, in March 1883.
Issue of deed of grant was made in July 1883 and the deed was delivered to Anton on 23 October 1883.
That same year, Anton (born In Denmark), was naturalized an Australian citizen on 7 April 1883, and described in the register as a farmer of Minden.
Anton died in 1914, at his home (whose address was Hillside, via Marburg), from Senile Debility and Syncope. He was 91 and was buried at Hillside, (now called St Johns Coolana,
Minden, near Lowood), in the cemetery there.
