    MR. C. BEISSEL
We regret to chronicle the death of Mr Chas. Beissel, J.P., which occurred at his residence at Burnley on Tuesday morning. Mr. Beissel was well known at Frankston, and was the proprietor of the mineral springs at that place. Deceased, who was 72 years of age, had been ailing for several months past. In mentioning the death of Mr. Beissel, the "Age," of Wednesday last says :- "A familiar figure has been removed from Richmond in the person of Mr Chas. Beissel, J.P., whose death occurred at his residence, Swan-street, Burnley, at an early hour on Tuesday morning. Deceased, who was of German extraction, came to Australia in 1849, and followed the fortunes of a digger for some years with varying success. For upwards of 50 years he had resided in Richmond, and was one of the pioneers of Burnley. He had a vivid recollection of the days when a convict stockade stood on the site now occupied by Messrs Lewis and Whitty as a factory at the river side, and Burwood-road and Church-street were formed by convict labor. He leaves a widow and three sons and two daughters.

    GOLDEN WEDDING
    ANNIVERSARY.
    Mr. and Mrs. Frank Beissel.
A good company of relatives and friends gathered at the home of Mrs. W. A. Beissel to congratulate Mr. and Mrs. Frank Beissel on the celebration of their golden wedding anniversary on Wednesday afternoon. The function was held on the same date as the wedding which was celebrated fifty years ago, in the Hay Methodist Church, by the Rev. G. Thompson.
The bride, whose maiden name was Miss Alice Scriffin, is a native of Hay, while the bridegroom came to Hay from Western Victoria 56 years ago in the good ship "Enterprise."
Among the visitors were Mrs. Donaldson (sister of the bride, and whose late husband was best man at the wedding), her daughter, Mrs. Lambert, from Sydney, and Mr. and Mrs. McDowell, and their sons, from Leeton. Unfortunately the bridesmaid could not be present, as she is resident in West Australia, where her husband, Mr. G. Latham, is the leader of the Country Party of the West Australian Parliament.
Speeches expressing the congratulations and good wishes of those present were given by Messrs. C. Beissel (son). A. McDowell. J. Speer. Lambert, and Rev. M. Layton, who presided.
The bride was made the recipient of some beautiful floral tributes. Songs were given by Mesdames Walker, Layton and Lambert. A very dainty afternoon tea was served, and the bride was called on to cut the beautifully decorated cake.
Many telegrams of congratulation were received by the happy couple from people in the district, and various parts of New South Wales and Victoria, among them being messages from Mr. and Mrs. Harris (daughter) of Canberra, and Mr. Halliday (son in-law) of Casino. Quite a number of apologies were received for absence, due to sickness.
The members of the family present were: Mr. C. Beissel. Mesdames Guild and Ashcroft. and Miss Emily Beissel. There are thirteen grand children.

    Obituary:
    The Riverine Grazier (Hay, NSW : 1873 - 1954), Tuesday 25 August 1942, page 2

Mr. William Francis Beissel There were many expressions of regret and a flow of old-time memories this morning when it became known that Mr. Frank Beissel had died suddenly last evening at his home in Pollard Street, Hay. Mr. Beissel had not enjoyed good health for some time past, but was able to get about and made no complaint. Last evening about 8 -o'clock he visited his daughter-in-law (Mrs. W. A. Beissel) who lives near by. He returned home, where his wife was alone, and suddenly collapsed and died. His wife, it is needless to say, received a great shock, and her calls for help were not heard by other members of the family for some little time.
Mr. Beissel, who was 76 years of age, was a native of the western district of Victoria. He came to Hay about 1888, on the snagging steamer Enterprise. He left the snaggers here and for a time worked at Tattersall's Hotel. The greater portion of his life in Hay, however, he spent in the employment of the late Mr. W. G. Butterworth, then Messrs. Dixon and Butterworth, and later W. G. Butterworth and Co., as a carpenter, till he retired some years ago. In 1889, deceased was married to Miss Alice Scriffen (a member of a well-known Hay family in the eighties) at the Hay Methodist Church, on the 19th June, by the Rev. Thompson. Mr. and Mrs. Beissel thus celebrated their golden wedding three years ago. It is rather tragic that Mrs. Beissel is 74 years of age to
    day.
The couple made their home in Hay, where they had resided ever since. Deceased was an earnest worker in the temperance cause and a prominent member of the once flourishing Franklin Division of the Sons and Daughters of Temperance, of which he acted as secretary till his death.
Mr. Beissel is survived by his wife, one son, Mr. Clive Beissel, and four daughters. Myrtle (Mrs. H. Ashcroft), Ivy (Mrs. J. Guild), Isabel (Mrs. R. Harris. Canberra), and Miss Emily Catherine Beissel. A second son (Mr. Wm. A. Beissel) died in March, 1930. while he was in office as Mayor of Hay. The family, which is one of the best known and respected families of. Hay, is receiving very many expressions of sympathy.
The funeral is timed to take place at 11 a.m. tomorrow, and the arrangements are in the hands of Mr. Wall.

DEATH OF MR. W. A. BEISSEL.
    MAYOR OF HAY.
We regret to have to record the death of Mr. William Arthur Beissel, Mayor of Hay, which sad event took place very early on Wednesday morning, at his home, in Alma Street. For some time it has been known that the deceased gentleman was suffering from Bright's disease, and that his condition of health was precarious. He had sought the opinion of Melbourne specialists, but they only confirmed the diagnosis of the local medical men, and gave him such advice as to diet and treatment as they thought appropriate. The patient himself displayed great courage and cheerfulness in the trying circumstances, and his conduct in this respect was such as to excite the admiration of those who knew under what abnormal difficulties he was carrying on his work. He literally died in harness, with the flag of fortitude flying. Although he suffered a good deal last week, the end came very peacefully, at 5 a.m., on the 19th.
William Arthur Beissel was born in Hay, in May, 1890, and was thus nearly forty years of age. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Beissel, and his parents, who still live in Hay, survive him. He went to school at the Hay Public School, and when he was old enough he was apprenticed to the coachbuilding firm of Messrs. Phil Baker and Sons. In 1910, he went to Sydney to gain further experience, and was for a time with a big coach building firm (Hilliers) in George Street West. He also spent some time at Grafton and Grenfell. While he was in Sydney he married Miss Emily Guild, whom he had previously met in Hay, the wedding taking place in St. John's, Darlinghurst. Their surviving family consists of five daughters, the youngest being an infant of five months. Shortly after his marriage he returned to Hay and went into partnership with his old master, Philip Baker. The partnership of Baker and Beissel was responsible for turning out some first-class work. After Mr. Baker's retirement, Mr. Beissel carried on the business, under the same firm name, until he disposed of it to Mr. John McNamara. In announcing his retirement from the coachbuilding business, Mr. Beissel said that owing to the general use of the motor car and lorry, the making of horse-drawn vehicles must be regarded as a dwindling enterprise, and he had decided to go into a line which was not likely to be pushed out. He then commenced business as a baker, which he carried on to the day of his death. In his young days he was an enthusiastic bandsman, and it was said of him that as a euphonium player he was in the front rank. He was always ready to form one of a scratch band, when one was needed for a charitable purpose, such as the hospital fete, and very frequently he organised such combinations. As a cricketer he was much in demand, and he was one of Hay's best bowlers when he was in his twenties. Amongst the other local sporting bodies and associations he took an interest in must be mentioned the Alma Beach Swimming Club, to which he gave very material support. For some years he was a member of the Hospital Committee.
But it is as a municipal councillor that Mr. Beissel will be longest remembered. He was first elected to the Council in 1921, to fill an extra-ordinary vacancy. He did not offer himself for re-election when the Council of which he was first a member ceased to act by effluxion of time, but there being insufficient candidates to fill all the vacancies, he became a candidate for one of the four unfilled seats, and was elected. That was in December, 1922. In the following year he was elected Mayor, and was re-elected three times, thus filling the office for four consecutive years. He dropped out of the Council for a time, but at the triennial elections of 1928, he was again asked to become a candidate, and when the polling was taken he was elected at the head of the poll, obtaining 420 votes out of a total of 481 cast. He was chosen as Mayor for 1929, and again for 1930. Although the town of Hay has been incorpoarted for fifty eight years, Mr. Beissel was the first native of the town to be elected to the highest civic position which it is in the power of the citizens to bestow. He was very proud of that distinction. He was also the first Mayor to die while holding the office. As a councillor he rendered good service to the ratepayers and to the public. One of the quoted sayings of Abraham Lincoln is: "I like to see a man proud of his city; and his conduct such that his city is proud of him." Mr. Beissel was very proud of his birthplace, Hay, and of its traditions. He did his best to instil a similar civic pride in his fellow-townsmen. In our opinion, it is mainly due to his advocacy that Hay has its electric supply, which is proving such a convenience to all who use it. Had he lived, we have no doubt he would have maintained his agitation for a town hall worthy of the municipality, and although he would have had to encounter interested and other opposition, his prospects of achieving that object were not negligible. He was always keen to extend the privileges and services which local government affords to as great a number as possible. That his large ideas brought him into conflict and opposition with others goes without saying, but even those who opposed him were ready to give him credit for his enthusiasm. As the chief, citizens of the town he did his duty in presiding at public functions in a manner which left nothing to be desired. When he was required to make an address, on such occasions as called for one, he was always heard with pleasure and satisfaction. He maintained the dignity of the position of Mayor in the most creditable manner, and has left behind him a record of achievement which it will be hard for any successor to excel. In private life he made many friends. He was a loving son, a devoted husband, and an affectionate father. He was a member of the old Foresters' Court, and when that organisation was merged with the M.U.I.O.O.F., he became a member of that body. He was a member of the Murrumbidgee Lodge of Freemasons and of the Waradgery Royal Arch Chapter.
The funeral took place late on Wednesday afternoon, and no more practical proof of the esteem in which the late Mayor was held could have been furnished than was provided by the attendance thereat. Over eighty cars followed the remains of the deceased gentleman to their resting place in the Methodist burial ground within the Hay Cemetery. Those present in cluded the Aldermen and Staff of the Municipal Council. The Shire Council was represented by the Shire Clerk, Mr. F. B. D'Arcey. Members of the lodges with which Mr. Beissel had been associated attended in their regalia. The burial service was conducted by Rev. A. P. Waters, who made a brief address at the graveside, in which he referred to the estimable character of the deceased and his services to the public. He also expressed the sympathy of the community with the bereaved wife and children, the parents and their family. The very large gathering present, Mr Waters said, was a most eloquent tribute to the esteem in which the deceased gentleman had been held. The Masonic service was read by the W.M., Mr. A. C. Welsh, assisted by the chaplain, Mr. T. F. Cook. Mr. McCracken, District Grand Master, read the Manchester Unity service. There were a very large number of wreaths sent, amongst them being floral tributes from the Staff and Pupils, Hay Public School; Alma Beach Swimming Club ; Lodge Murrumbidgee No. 37; R.S.S.I.L.A. (Hay Sub-branch); Hay Parents and Citizens' Association; Principals and Comps., Waradgery R.A. Chapter; Hay Municipal Council and Staff; Staff and Pupils, Hay War Memorial High School; and the M.U.I.O.O.F Lodge.
